WILD ICELANDIC MOSS

Cetraria islandica (L.) Ach.

Ethically Hand-Foraged | Rožca, Slovenian Alps | Wild Botanical Lichen

A quiet treasure from the heart of the Slovenian Alpine wilderness.

Despite its name, Icelandic Moss is not actually a moss, but a remarkable wild-growing lichen that thrives in northern and mountainous landscapes, where it forms intricate, branching structures in soft shades of olive, brown, and grey-green.

Our Icelandic Moss is personally hand-foraged by the founder of SUGAIA on the mountain slopes of Rožca, near Mount Golica in the Karavanke range of the Slovenian Alps.

Carefully gathered by hand in small quantities, with deep respect for nature and its delicate mountain ecosystems.

Growing slowly over many years, this extraordinary botanical is a reminder of nature's quiet resilience and the importance of mindful harvesting.

AN ANCIENT BOTANICAL WITH MANY USES

Treasured for centuries in traditional European and Nordic herbalism, Cetraria islandica has a long history of use in herbal teas, respiratory preparations, botanical extracts, and even traditional cuisine.

Naturally rich in lichen polysaccharides, including lichenin and isolichenin, Icelandic Moss produces a distinctive, gently mucilaginous texture when prepared in water.

Throat & Respiratory Traditions

Traditionally used in herbal preparations to soothe irritated throats and ease the discomfort associated with dry, irritating coughs. Its naturally occurring mucilage has made it a valued ingredient in traditional throat teas, syrups, and respiratory herbal blends.

Herbal Teas & Infusions

Prepared as a warm herbal infusion or decoction, Icelandic Moss has a naturally earthy, distinctly bitter character. It has also traditionally been used in herbal preparations associated with digestive comfort and appetite.

Traditional Culinary Uses

Icelandic Moss also has a fascinating culinary history. In Iceland and Scandinavia, properly prepared lichen was traditionally incorporated into soups, porridges, breads, and other recipes.

Its natural polysaccharides can create a gel-like consistency, making it an interesting traditional ingredient for thickening soups and creating botanical jellies. Soaking and appropriate preparation help reduce its characteristic bitterness.

Tinctures, Macerates & Botanical Extracts

Icelandic Moss can be used in traditional botanical preparations, including:

  • Water-based macerates and herbal infusions

  • Decoctions and concentrated botanical extracts

  • Alcohol-based herbal tinctures

  • Traditional herbal syrups

  • Culinary preparations and botanical recipes

Different extraction methods draw out different compounds, making this versatile lichen an intriguing material for botanical exploration.
